“Into the Light”

I’m inspired by majestic horses.

As I watch them make their way into the light, I find myself taking notes. Let's all strive to find our way into the light.

Do running horses give you the feeling of courage and motivation? I see horses and I immediately think of majestic powerful beauty coupled with such steadfast peace. There’s a regal strength when you keep showing up; holding yourself to the vision not yet realized. This piece represents a lot for me personally. Keep showing up. You’ve got this!

This iconic tree and flower brings me so much joy.

The instant I see magnolias I think of home.

And fun fact:

The oldest trees on the grounds of the White House are two southern magnolias planted between 1829 and 1837 by Andrew Jackson, in memory of his wife, Rachel, who died two weeks after Jackson won the election.

Magnolia are always dripping with moisture, beauty and fragrance.

“You are a Warrior”

I’m curious if you consider yourself a survivor?

It might mean you have had to have become a warrior.

When I was a child I was so mesmerized by a native American doll and I got it as a present for Christmas.

She embodied so much of what spirit I wanted to have; that overcoming nonnegotiable “I will survive” attitude… and so now at 55 I painted her. She reminds me of something important within me.

I hope that she’s an inspiration for you.

You’ve got this.

You’re a survivor because you are a warrior.

“The Horse & Traveler”

Thankfully, the weight of your journey does not rest solely upon you. Even though you’ve prepared for this you may find yourself spent, fatigued and unable to take another step.

These moments are humbling but also punctuate the truth: Your Life has always been so much more about WHO you with rather than the “WHAT or WHERE”.

I’m celebrating beautiful souls who are with us in the journey. It’s true, the traveler is tired, spent and maybe even discouraged. But that sweet horse holds steady and keeps moving forward.

*Some days we are the horse.

Either way, we know the beauty of carrying or being carried

“You Make the World Go Round”

We’re tempted to think that the world goes round and round based on force and power and will but it’s really the softness. It’s the mother nursing her baby in the unseen places in the middle of the night or stopping in the middle of the day sitting down on the edge the concrete wall while running errands to feed her baby,

This is what makes the world go round. It’s the feminine energy of nurture. It’s longing and being ok with that. It’s crying and vulnerability and softness.

You make the world go round.

In this way on this day holding your sweet child, taking time to drink enough water and eat the right food and to do the things that benefit another, YOU make the world go round.

“Sacred Summer Nights”

The gifts of the world are so plenteous every day. The “lightening bugs” flickering; wildflowers swaying; the cadence of the crickets singing; the faint pink glowing in the sky after sunset, all such luxurious gifts we are given.

In our youth these things might not hold such poignancy but as we grow older we think back with such fondness of those summer nights when longing and dreaming carried us. Those Sacred Summer Nights can still carry us if we let them.

Emerging around you are the flower gifts and intricacies that only you will fully know.

“First Dance Feathers”

“There’s a split-second decision you have to make. Walking into the first dance wearing a hand-me-down feathered dress with a voice in your head saying you should have tamed your hair.

And now you have to decide how you entertain that thought. The lights find you. and the feathers feel like they are fluttering in your stomach now.

And that second, that second shapes you.

You decide. You stand tall. You say in your heart and to yourself “this is a time for wild hair and feathers under lights”.

You look to find the girl who has her eyes cast down and looks to have doubts just like you just did and you smile at her and tell her how great she looks. This shapes you.

This night you silence what needs to be silenced and lean into kindness and generosity brought to you by first dance feathers.

“When All Else Fails”

About 6 years ago on an overcast day I was struggling in my health but also in my mindset. It was a gray day. I kept looking to the sky for some kind of sign.

In the last moments of the day as the sun was sinking all I could see was overcast skies. I couldn’t see the sun descending …until that last second! The clouds parted and the sky lit up in such glorious color. It was a last second explosion of hope. I needed the reminder.

No matter your earthly experience, do you know how divinely and absolutely adored you are?

“You are Mother

Motherhood shapes and enlarges your world to a degree that seems impossible and indescribable. And yet I attempt to capture on canvas an edge of that gorgeous glorious terrain.

Motherhood introduces you to places and emotions never before seen, let alone experienced. It also highlights in massive doses ALL that you DO NOT know. It is the ultimate Humbling. Maybe being so acquainted with your limitations is a gift and yet for your child, you boldly find yourself desiring and asking for wisdom in spades.

Motherhood is earthy trails, lush meadows, treacherous mountain hikes and vast uncharted open seas. This journey of love is both crippling and freeing simultaneously as it places you always within the grasp of heartache ...and yet you find you never shrink back from this. It is LOVE in its most altruistic form. Divine. Yet Earthly.

For your child,

You will feel small yet full of strength.

You will feel afraid yet live in boldness.

You will feel discounted by some yet seen by one.

You will feel misunderstood yet hold your ground.

You will feel unsure yet unstoppable.

You will feel tired yet joyous.

You will feel old yet tethered to youth.

You will fail yet survive.

“You are Free

I have a huge lump in my throat for the gratitude I feel for this woman. She’s a woman of faith who sees everything from a perspective of giving and hope. Our paths converged when I moved back to KC. My daughter Bethany kept saying “mom, you have to meet Crystal. Your health hurdles are so similar. And she gets it”. When we met, I felt that to the core of me.

She has a heart full, always. Even amidst pain points you’ll find her finding a stash of joy and love to give out like candy.

As I was painting, I prayed that what she gives be multiplied upon her. And a few nights ago I had a dream about her. Her Nanny was clapping with exuberance with every dance step she took. Every twirl in the sunset gloriousness broke ancestral oppressive chains.

Having the privilege to paint my fellow sunset lover soul sister has been so meaningful.

“Somewhere in Time

My friend who commissioned this painting had a picture when she was a teen of a similar scene. A girl walking the beach, gathering up sand dollars. There was a man in the distance. The longing she had for the man that she would one day meet ignited a poem within her.

“Where are you?

Somewhere in my mind I see you, but it is too foggy.

Somewhere in time I’ll meet you,but it seems so distant.

Again I ask, where are you?

You are in my heart, but not at my side

You are in my dreams, but not in my reality.

Where, oh where, are you?

You are truly wanted.

You are truly needed.

You are truly special.

And will be truly loved by me.

Where are you?”

“Summers in Newnan

This painting was so meaningful because of the memories made in this summer sanctuary. Renee only had a black and white grainy photo of this special place in Newnan, GA. She explained the feelings of warmth and sunshine. She stayed weeks during the summer with memories of daydreaming and eating plums and gazing out over cow pastures while sitting on that white rock. Her grandmother’s house is still there. And so is the white rock. She said

“Those Newnan memories are precious. This place is like a sanctuary.”

I felt so honored to collaborate to get that emotional feeling represented in this painting.

The colors of summer.

The light coming through the trees.

The rock by the tree, ready and waiting to listen.

The energy and joy of family generations are represented here.

“Almost Home

It was such a privilege to get a call from Cindy. She experienced a vivid dream just before her mom passed into the next realm. She saw the meadows and long road, the vivid sky leading and drawing her home. In past conversations she and her mom talked about how in this world we’re just walking each other home.

This vision was such a grace.

There was so much redemption in the relationship with this mom and daughter and so it seemed fitting that God would gift her with such a dream.

We’re all walking each other home.

Almost Home is a sentiment I think we all resonate with on this side.

“The Epitome of a Lady

Myrtle Foster Faulkner was a mother and grandmother remembered and adored for her gracious feminine ways. Her grandson (who was like a son to her) contacted me to see if we could capture her essence. We worked together to make a commission piece to honor her legacy.

The reference photo of her in this beautiful gown was black and white. He wanted the rich deep colors present. So we set about texting ideas. As he shared the “story of her” I was so moved. So elegant, yet humble, she lived a life of such contribution. Her children (and grandchildren) rise up to call her blessed.

Aquire a Print

A Cost-effective Way to Possess Beloved Artwork

Please send your answers to the following answers via email to sonyadenisethompson@gmail.com:

  1. What is the name of the painting(s) you desire?
  2. Do you have a size already in mind? Please note that the original painting will dictate our options to keep in scale.
  3. Do you want: a)canvas or b)high quality paper giclee print?

Canvas is sturdy and durable, making it an ideal option for prints that will last over time. It isn't as prone to yellowing, fading, creases, and damages as much as paper is, so you don't need heavy glass frames to protect it.

A fine art paper (gilcee) print is an image printed on acid free paper using archival quality ink. This combination prevents the print from yellowing or fading and has a much longer lifespan than other types of paper. These materials are often used to produce “museum quality” prints.

Whether a commission of collaboration or an offering of a perspective of my own, my desire is to capture the magic essence within a moment, memory or subject.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

~Albert Einstein

In essence, artwork is choosing to see the miracle.

A painting is a powerful tool that can harness imagination and emotion to bring light, hope, perspective, healing and peace into the world.

Brushstrokes are to me like poetry in mood and motion. The brushstroke merges thoughts, ideas, cadence, emotions, and color until they come together to create an opening for the heart to spill onto the canvas, freezing time.

It is in this moment that something beautiful is born...

or reborn.

The synergy between my expression and your interpretation brings about a unique energy that has never been experienced. The sum is greater than its parts, and the world seems right when we take notice and call out beauty together.

About Me

I went to college in the 80's and studied Commercial Art. Although I did not pursue a career in art, I was always writing, singing or painting. I had 5 babies in a short amount of time so my creative outlets turned to mothering and family life.

As the children got older I ventured into oil painting and have never left. My 5 are grown and I am enjoying such a prolific season.

Whether collaborating on a commission piece or investigating color and light on the canvas, I’m honoring emotion and the feeling of freedom that has come as a result. Midlife has been a rebirth of sorts. What a beautiful gift.
